Comporta in October: Weather, Things to Do & What to Expect

October might be one of Comporta’s most underrated months.
The summer crowds have disappeared, the landscape becomes quieter and the rhythm of the region changes completely. Beach days are still possible, restaurants are easier to enjoy and the rice fields, forests and Sado Estuary take on a different character.
For travellers who value nature, space and authenticity more than a busy summer atmosphere, October can actually be one of the best times to visit Comporta.
Here is what you should know before planning an October trip.
What is Comporta like in October?
October marks the transition between summer and autumn in Comporta.
The villages and beaches become noticeably quieter after September, but the region does not simply shut down. Local life continues, and this is precisely what makes October interesting.
Without the intensity of the summer season, it becomes easier to explore the area at a slower pace. Roads are quieter, beaches have significantly more space and places such as the rice fields and Carrasqueira can be experienced without the same pressure of peak season.
This is a different Comporta.
Less about the summer scene and more about the landscape itself.
What is the weather like in Comporta in October?
October weather in Comporta can vary considerably.
There can still be warm, sunny days that feel surprisingly close to summer, particularly at the beginning of the month. However, autumn has already arrived and visitors should also be prepared for cooler mornings, changing Atlantic conditions and occasional rain.
For this reason, October is better suited to travellers who want to explore Comporta, rather than those planning a holiday exclusively around sunbathing.
A light jacket and layers are useful, particularly for mornings, sunsets and activities close to the Sado Estuary.
And when the sun does appear, having an almost empty Atlantic beach in October can be difficult to beat.
Can you still go to the beach in Comporta in October?
Absolutely.
Comporta’s beaches do not disappear when summer ends, and October can provide some beautiful beach days.
What changes is the experience.
Instead of crowded car parks and busy stretches of sand, you may find huge sections of coastline with very few people around.
Comporta Beach and Carvalhal Beach remain two of the most obvious choices, while those willing to explore further can discover quieter stretches of Atlantic coastline towards Soltróia or Melides.
Swimming conditions depend heavily on the weather and ocean conditions on the day. The Atlantic should always be approached with respect, particularly outside supervised bathing periods.
Even without swimming, October is an excellent month for long walks along the coast, photography and simply experiencing the scale of Comporta’s beaches.
Explore the Comporta rice fields
October is also an interesting time to discover the landscape beyond the beach.
The rice fields are one of the defining elements of Comporta. They shape the territory between the villages, the Sado Estuary and the Atlantic coast, and understanding them helps explain why this region looks and feels so different from other Portuguese coastal destinations.
Exploring these landscapes slowly, rather than simply driving past them on the main road, reveals another side of Comporta.
Our private Land Rover experiences travel through carefully selected local routes connecting rice fields, forests, wetlands and some of the region’s lesser known landscapes.
It is one of the best ways to understand that Comporta is much more than its beaches.
Visit Carrasqueira and its Palafitic Pier
The Carrasqueira Palafitic Pier, known locally as Cais Palafítico da Carrasqueira, is one of the most distinctive places in the region.
Built by local fishermen over generations, its irregular wooden walkways extend across the mudflats of the Sado Estuary.
October is particularly enjoyable here because the quieter atmosphere allows you to appreciate the landscape without the larger numbers of summer visitors.
The experience also changes dramatically with the tide, light and weather, making Carrasqueira worth visiting even for travellers who have seen photographs of it before arriving.
Go birdwatching around the Sado Estuary
Autumn is an especially interesting period for anyone interested in nature and birdlife.
The combination of the Sado Estuary, wetlands, rice fields and agricultural landscapes creates important habitats for numerous species.
Depending on the location and time of year, it is possible to observe birds such as flamingos, white storks, grey herons, egrets and glossy ibises.
At Comporta Experience, our private birdwatching experiences combine scenic routes with selected observation points, allowing guests to discover this ecosystem quietly and at their own pace.
Binoculars are provided during the experience.
Discover Comporta by Land Rover
October is arguably better suited to exploring inland Comporta than the hottest months of summer.
A private Land Rover tour allows you to move between very different landscapes within the same experience: rice fields, pine forests, wetlands, traditional villages and the Atlantic coast.
Rather than simply moving from attraction to attraction, the objective is to understand how these landscapes connect and how local communities have adapted to them.
For first time visitors, this can provide valuable context for everything else they experience during their stay.
Walk, kayak and explore nature
Cooler temperatures also make October particularly suitable for active experiences.
Guided walking routes allow you to explore areas that can feel considerably hotter during July and August.
When wind, tides and weather conditions are suitable, kayaking and paddleboarding around the Sado can also offer an exceptionally peaceful perspective of the landscape.
The important difference in October is flexibility.
Rather than building the day around a rigid schedule, it is often better to adapt activities to the conditions and make the most of the best part of each day.
Are restaurants open in Comporta in October?
October is quieter than summer and some seasonal businesses may reduce their opening days or close outside the main season.
However, Comporta and the surrounding region still offer good places to eat.
This is one area where planning ahead becomes particularly useful. Instead of assuming that every summer restaurant will be open every day, check opening times and make reservations before travelling.
The quieter season also provides an opportunity to explore more traditional restaurants and discover the region beyond its famous summer beach clubs.

Is October a good time to visit Comporta?
For the right traveller, yes.
If your idea of Comporta revolves entirely around hot weather, busy beach restaurants and guaranteed days by the sea, July and August provide a very different experience.
But if you are looking for landscapes, local culture, nature, quiet beaches and the freedom to explore without peak season crowds, October can be exceptional.
It is particularly suited to couples, nature lovers, photographers and travellers who prefer discovering a destination rather than simply staying in it.
There is also something very Comporta about visiting when everything becomes quieter.
You begin to notice the rice fields, the birds, the fishermen, the changing tides and the enormous amount of empty space between the Atlantic and the Sado.
And that is often where the real Comporta begins.
